பெருக்க மரம் என்பது மன்னார் பகுதியில் காணப்படும் மிகவும் அபூர்வமான மற்றும் வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த மரமாகும். உள்ளூரில் இது “ஆபிரிக்கா மரம்” அல்லது “அலி மரம்” எனவும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த மரம் பழங்கால அரபு மற்றும் ஆபிரிக்க கடல் வணிகர்கள் மூலம் மன்னார் பகுதிக்கு கொண்டு வரப்பட்டதாக கருதப்படுகிறது.

🌳 Baobab Tree in Mannar
The Baobab Tree in Mannar is one of the most remarkable and rare natural landmarks in Sri Lanka. Locally known as “Ali Gaha” or “African Baobab,” this giant tree is believed to have been introduced centuries ago through ancient Arabian and African maritime trade routes that passed through the Mannar region.
The Baobab tree is famous for its enormous trunk, which can store thousands of liters of water, allowing it to survive in dry, arid climates. Its unusual appearance—wide, bottle-shaped trunk and sparse branches—makes it one of the most distinctive trees in the world.
The Mannar Baobab trees are estimated to be several hundred years old and stand as living witnesses to the island’s historical connections with Africa, Arabia, and India. They are often found near coastal villages and ancient settlements, adding cultural and historical value to the region.
Locals traditionally use parts of the tree for medicinal purposes, food (fruit pulp), and shade. The fruit, known as “monkey bread,” is rich in nutrients and widely recognized for its health benefits.

Baobab Tree යනු මන්නාරම් ප්රදේශයේ දක්නට ලැබෙන ඉතා දුර්ලභ හා ඓතිහාසික වශයෙන් වැදගත් ගසකි. මෙය දේශීයව “අලි ගස” හෝ “අප්රිකානු බාඔබාබ්” ලෙසද හැඳින්වේ. පැරණි අරාබි සහ අප්රිකානු වෙළඳ නාවිකයන් මඟින් මෙය මන්නාරම් ප්රදේශයට ගෙන ආ බව විශ්වාස කෙරේ.
බාඔබාබ් ගසට විශාල කඳක් ඇති අතර එය ජලය විශාල ප්රමාණයක් ගබඩා කර තබා ගැනීමට හැකියාව ඇත. එම නිසා වියළි දේශගුණික තත්ත්වයන්හිදීද එය දිගු කාලයක් ජීවත් විය හැක. එහි විශේෂිත බෝතල් හැඩැති කඳ සහ අඩු ශාඛා සංඛ්යාව නිසා එය ඉතා විශේෂිත පෙනුමක් ඇත.
