🦩 Greater Flamingos in Mannar

Greater Flamingos are one of the most iconic migratory birds seen in the Mannar region of Sri Lanka. The wetlands, lagoons, and coastal salt pans of Mannar provide an ideal habitat for these elegant birds, especially during the migratory season. Thousands of flamingos arrive in large flocks, creating a breathtaking pink spectacle across the shallow waters.

Mannar’s unique coastal ecosystem, including lagoons, mudflats, and salterns, offers rich feeding grounds for flamingos. They primarily feed on algae, small crustaceans, and plankton, which give them their distinctive pink coloration. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy wetland environment.

These birds are usually seen in areas such as the Mannar Lagoon, Thiruketheeswaram wetlands, and nearby salt pans. Greater flamingos are social birds, often found in large colonies. Their synchronized movements, graceful standing posture, and striking color make them one of the most photographed species in Sri Lanka’s northern wetlands.
